WHAT RUGBY IS:
A highly organized amateur sport
The most exciting thing you’ll ever do
An outlet for people of all walks of life
A great family activity
A lifetime sport
What Rugby is NOT:
Organized Mayhem – Matches are controlled by a referee whose word is final. On the field he is addressed only as “Sir” and only by the team captain.
An Eighty-Minute Brawl – Misconduct and dangerous play are not tolerated. Anyone expelled from a game is brought before the disciplinary committee of the New York State Rugby Conference. Sportsmanship is stressed more in rugby than in any other sport.
A Pickup Game – Rugby is a highly competitive, intense contact sport. It requires a high level of fitness and preparation. Anyone who participates must be dedicated and disciplined. There is also a social side to the game with your opponent. The image that rugby is for hooligans is a total misconception. League competitions are structured to produce a national high school champion.
A Dangerous sport – While there are levels of risk in every game, recent scientifically prepared studies have shown that the likelihood of serious injury is three times greater in football. The absence of helmets and padding actually lessens the chance of injury by forcing a more controlled and less violent level of play
